About US
The Human Rights Centre Uganda HRCU is a duly registered non-governmental organization that was established in November, 2008 with the sole aim of contributing to an enabling environment for the promotion and protection of human rights, especially the rights of human rights defenders HRDs. Since its establishment, HRCU has been implementing a number of activities through three major focus areas namely capacity building for HRDs to understand their rights, responsibilities and the mechanisms available for their protection at national, regional and international level; research, documentation and reporting on the environment in which HRDs operate and; advocacy for an enabling operating environment for the work of HRDs in Uganda.
Job Summary  The Volunteer – Advocacy will be responsible for contributing to the implementation of the HRCU Advocacy Strategy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities 
Assist in the preparation of background papers, studies, reports and commentaries to guide HRCU advocacy initiatives;
Contribute to the sustenance of HRCU advocacy initiatives at the community/grass-root, national , regional international level aimed amongst others at systems changes;
Compile and share relevant advocacy related information with beneficiaries and partners/key stakeholders of HRCU;
Participate in organizing and conducting capacity building workshops for human rights defenders on their rights, responsibilities, security, advocacy engagements, among others;
Contribute to the identification of advocacy areas, organise and participate in media engagements such as radio talk shows and televised debates or other forms of media advocacy aimed at sustaining visibility of HRCU and HRDs;
Provide support in the development and publicizing of key advocacy messages for the protection and promotion of human rights and human rights defenders in Uganda;
Participate in and contribute to research and reporting on key issues affecting human rights defenders in Uganda.
General duties
Carry out research on identified issues regarding the environment in which Human Rights Defenders operate. This includes conducting field research to collect primary data and sorting the data plus the collection of secondary data in and out of office
Compile monthly articles for the website
Participate in preparatory meetings for any programmes activity and in the actual activity when called upon
Contribute to HRCU’s reports proposals and other documents where necessary
Submit weekly and monthly progress reports to the supervisor
Represent HRCU at different fora as may be assigned from time to time.
Write daily newspaper updates and minutes of meetings, conferences, workshops, and external meetings attended
Carry out any other activity that may be assigned to you from time to time.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The applicant must hold a Bachelors’ Degree in Law and /or Human Rights
Any additional training in the related field would be an added advantage
Three years of working experience in a Non – Government Organisation.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast paced and complex environment.
Flexible and proactive attitude towards problem-solving
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
Maintain professional and positive demeanour
Good computer skills; that is working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
Proven accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills
Possess good organisational skills with the capability of setting priorities when multiple demands are present
Ability to work with minimal supervision
