About VINES Project
TechnoServe, CRS and Frontier Co-op are implementing VINES, a five year, $13 million, USDA Food for Progress program that will make Uganda the world’s next leading supplier of high-quality vanilla. Led by CRS, VINES will leverage the expertise of CRS and its world class consortium of partners including TechnoServe, associated experts and leading international buyers to provide technical assistance to enhance the production of safe, clean, pure vanilla, develop market links with US trade networks, and strengthen an enabling public policy network to reduce vanilla theft to transform the lives of 16,200 farmers, 356 self-employed service and input providers, 480 processors’ employees; and generating 15,820 new on-farm seasonal and permanent processing jobs to reach 32,856 vanilla stakeholders.
 
In turn, this will provide international buyers with a new origin that will stabilize the extreme price volatility for this unique spice.
 
Within the consortium, TechnoServe will lead in market analysis, business planning, farmer business capacity building, agripreneur and youth training, input supply and business relationship management.
 
Job Summary  Technoserve is recruiting a Business Sustainability and Upgrading Specialist who will support the implementation of TechnoServe’s efforts under VINES-Project and contribute to the overall delivery of program activities with Emphasis on building the Capacity of Farmer Organizations. The incumbent will be embedded within Rwenzori Farmers’ Cooperative Union RFCU representing over 2,000 vanilla farmers, as well as cocoa and coffee farmers. The incumbent will be based in Kasese at RFCU office to assist with the development and execution of a 5-year business and development plan, including member services, operations, and marketing. In addition, the incumbent may be called upon to support other Producer Organizations and other activities and objectives under TechnoServe’s scope of work, in particular support to Vanilla processor and exporters developing direct-farmer sourcing programs and researching complementary value chains.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities 
Capacity building of Farmer Organizations
Assist the development of POs five-year business and development plan based on TechnoServe’s POSA participative assessment and planning process.
Managerial capacity building of producer organizations in areas of business planning, marketing strategy development, governance of the board, improved member relations and
Work with the Micro Enterprise specialist to organize training of trainers and support ToT to provide members with Farming as a Business skill.
Support RFCU to increase its services, including financial service provisions,
Assist RFCU to develop a more concentrated geographic presence in a micro-territory to use its financial and human resources more effectively.
Support RFCU to further develop value added processing in other crops such as coffee and cocoa to diversify its revenue base and further diversify farmer crop production.
Support commercial management capabilities to ensure professional and effective execution of supply contracts.
Support strategy and implementation of UVAN and RFCU supply chain development, farmer recruitment and training
Facilitate linkages development among RFCU and its member POs to business development service providers to build capacity in core areas such governance, marketing, member services, and inclusive leadership of women and youth.
Facilitate Market linkages and Agricultural Finance
Support the RFCU and its member POs to improve access to financial services for their members by introducing one or a combination of signature financial products.
Provide customized business and technical advisory support to processors
Facilitate relationship and business partnerships development between RFCU, Processors and other actors with commercial finance service providers to leverage additional finance.
Program Coordination and Implementation
Contribute to project activity reports and TechnoServe internal monitoring, evaluation, and Learning MEL
Support Producer Organizations including RFCU to collect relevant data for their own performance monitoring as well as project indicators.


Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate for the TechnoServe Business Sustainability and Upgrading Specialist BSUS – Producer Organizations job must hold a Bachelors degree in business-related studies required
At least five years of relevant experience in mobilization, organization, development, capacity building and training of smallholder farmer organizations as well as building strong client and stakeholder relationships.
Strong project management and some financial analysis skills
Minimum of five years’ field and technical experience with agribusiness development, agribusiness experience in Uganda is required
Experience working with food aggregation and processing, supply chain development, out-grower networks, and knowledge of Market Systems Development approach preferred
Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills a must
Ability to develop well-written, cohesive analyses and reports
Ability to generate innovative solutions in work situations
Proven ability and experience working with teams will be an added advantage
Fluency in English required
