Akina Mama wa Afrika is a Pan-African feminist organization with headquarters
in Kampala, Uganda, dedicated to improving the political, economic, social
status of African women, through enhancing their individual and collective
leadership capacities.
Job Summary The Programme Officer – Economic Justice provides support to
strengthen and deliver AMwA’s Economic Justice work focusing on issues of
climate justice, tax justice, and decent work for women in Africa, all
anchored to feminist economic practice. The officer contributes to building
and strengthening solidarity with AMwA’s networks and partners and works to
connect economic justice issues to broader women’s rights issues.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy, program planning, and implementation
Provide support to annual program planning processes and implementation of
the activities under economic and social justice
Assist in carrying out field supervision of programs with guidance from the
Economic Justice Lead
Provide support in the development of program concepts and plans in the
area of economic justice
Contribute to the integration of feminist economic analysis in AMwA’s key
thematic areas of focus
Conduct regular program support and monitoring visits to partners
Support in developing funding proposals and other fundraising activities
Feminist leadership development and capacity building
Support in building the capacity of women’s rights organizations and
activists to enhance their knowledge to inform their engagement and action in
economic justice and rights.
Coordinate with relevant partners the annual African Women Leadership
Institute AWLI, public lectures and follow up on action points.
Provide support in capacity assessments and capacity building of partners
Documentation and feminist analysis
Provide support in assessing trends and systematic change relevant to
economic justice focusing on macroeconomic policies, practices, systems, and
structures.
Generate body of knowledge on African feminist economics through research,
feminist analysis and documentation.
Develop analytical papers/blogs on feminist analysis of key macroeconomic
issues relevant to AMwA’s areas of work.
Participate in the dissemination of results of research projects to
internal and external constituents through a variety of avenues.
Nurture networks and alliances with academia, and research institutions
Movement building and advocacy
Engage and nurture alumni of AMwA’s leadership institute
Coordinate and nurture a community of African Feminists working on economic
justice.
Support in creating robust, cutting edge influencing strategy to ensure
concrete changes are attained in the different policy process that AMwA
engages in
Work closely with the other thematic teams to amplify and sustain voices of
African women and girls in all their diversities
Participate in identifying and initiating strategic networks and alliances
and maintains AMwA’s external credibility and high-level external relations
with various stakeholders within CSO, AU institutions, UN, and among AMwA’s
development partners;
Represent AMwA and participate in network and alliance meetings, events,
and fora at national and international levels
Contribute to building strategic partnerships with key external
stakeholders that will lead to the creation of strong movements for collective
advocacy.
Support in partner identification, capacity assessments, and capacity
building
Work collaboratively with the other teams to sustain the voices of African
women and girls in all their diversities and their demand for economic justice

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social
Sciences, Economics, Development Studies, and Gender, Law or any other
relevant discipline
Three years of experience in a similar position, working on public policy
issues and using a gendered analysis of macroeconomics.
Evidence of thought leadership through writing blogs, papers, opinion
pieces, etc, and engagement in panel discussions is strongly desired.
A proven commitment to women’s rights activism and demonstrable experience
in social justice or human rights broadly;
Solid technical knowledge of/expertise in economic justice using a feminist
frame of analysis.
Proven interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective
working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-interest, multi-
ethnic environment
Ability to communicate and work effectively in English.
Competency in French will be added an advantage
